![]() He met the deadline impressing the Dean who later said to him that he was putting Kalam under stress and was asking him to meet a difficult deadline. The Dean was dissatisfied with his lack of progress in a senior class project and threatened to revoke his scholarship unless the project was finished within the next three days. In 1955 he moved to Madras to study Aerospace Engineering in Madras Institute of Technology. He went to Saint Joseph’s College, Tiruchirapalli, then affiliated with the University of Madras. Previously he had average grades but later he was described as a bright and hardworking student who had a strong desire to learn. He studied in Schwartz Higher Secondary School. This is why Kalam was born and grew up during poverty. Even though his ancestors had numerous properties and were wealthy, they lost most of their fortunes by the 1920s. He was the youngest of four brothers and one sister in his family. ![]() ![]() His father’s name was Jainulabdeen Marakayar who was a boat owner and imam of a local mosque. He was born on 15th October, 1931 in Rameswaram, Madras Presidency, British India which is presently known as Tamil Nadu, India.
